Abhidhamma Class No. 32, 28 January 2003
“Review of Abhidhamma Classes 22, 23 and 24”
Glossary of Pali language terms with approximate English translations
hiri: a sense of moral shame, bashfulness, shyness, ashamed of performing unwholesome deeds
ottappa: a sense of moral dread, fear to do unwholesome deeds
saddha: confidence, trust, faith, non-fogginess
sati: wakefulness, not floating away, memory, mindfulness, awareness, alertness, lucidity of mind, attentiveness, focused, not moving away from
sobhana cetasikas: the 25 beautiful mental concomitants
sobhana sadharana cetasikas: beautiful ones; those which associate with all sobhana cittas; a subgroup consisting of 19 of the sobhana cetasikas
With saddha firmly established we now revise the next three sobhana sadharana cetasika: sati, hiri and ottappa.
The sobhana sadharana cetasika are those which associate with all sobhana cittas.
For Abhidhamma class 32 we revise Abhidhamma Classes 22, 23 and 24:
Abhidhamma Class No. 22, 19 November 2002, “sati (wakefulness of mind, not floating away, memory)”.
Abhidhamma Class No. 23, 26 November 2002, “hiri (a sense of moral shame)”.
Abhidhamma Class No. 24, 3 December 2002, “ottappa (a sense of moral dread)”
Papers for Classes 22, 23 and 24 are included in Vol. 12 No. 8 of the Buddha Dhyana Dana review Online at:
www.bdcu.org.au and www.bddronline.net.au
May all beings be well and happy.
