Our Teacher, Chan Master John D. Hughes and his wife Anita attended the Official Opening of the 'Spring Flowers Autumn Grass - The Spirit of Nature in Asian Art' Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria on Wednesday 20 February from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. John D. Hughes and Anita were driven to the exhibition and attended by Ms. Julie O'Donnell and Mr. Julian Bamford.
The exhibition from 21 February to 21 April is drawn from works in the Asian collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, and is located at the National Gallery of Victoria on Russell.
The Exhibition was officially opened by Dr. Terry Cutler, Chairman, Australia Council for the Arts. Welcoming addresses were also given by Mr. Rupert Myer, Council of Trustees for the National Gallery Victoria, Jo Maindonald from Kazari Gallery - the principal sponsors of the exhibition and Dr. Gerard Vaughan, Council of Trustees for the National Gallery Victoria.
Following the opening speeches guests were invited to view the many rare and beautiful exhibits, works dating from the 14th Century up to two paintings by friend of Master Hughes, Mr. Kim Hoa Tram of Melbourne.
The exhibition gave great happiness to our Teacher and Anita, who presented gifts of the Chinese New Year Blessing cards to many persons and met with friends including the Exhibition Curator Dr. Mae Anna Pang, Senior Curator
of Asian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria and Zen Painting and Chinese Calligraphy artist Mr. Kim Hoa Tram.
Our Teacher was presented with a full colour catalogue of the 'Spring Flowers Autumn Grass - The Spirit of Nature in Asian Art' exhibition by Dr.Pang, who is also the editor of the exhibition catalogue.
Master Hughes and Anita were pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Terry Cutler, Chairman of the Australia Council, and thank him for kindly providing his opening address to us to load onto this website.
We thank our Teacher for making Chan painting strong in Australia.
